How to repair/replace iPhone 3G screen?

The top most layer of the iPhone screen is a piece of glass.

You can find it for around $16. But NEVER, NEVER buy this alone. It’s impossible for you to replace this glass alone.

Glued to the glass are the home button, rubber seal, a plastic frame, and the digitizer.

We HIGHLY recommend you to buy this as one assembled unit. We have only seen it at the http://www.pdaparts.com/ before, but it is currently sold out.
Alternatively, you can buy the glass with digitizer, but without the home button.

It will be quite challenging to pry apart the plastic frame and port the home button from your old screen to the new one. This is available at the following stores for $69.

Underneath the glass screen and the digitizer is the LCD:

You can usually find this for around $89.

How to tell which Screen part you need for the iPhone 3G

· LCD Only: If the image under the glass is broken and the touch panel is NOT then you only need an LCD.
· Touch Panel aka Digitizer: If the top touch panel or aka glass top is cracked or broken but the image under it is fine then you only need the Touch Panel.
· Complete Screen with Touch Panel and LCD: If the top touch panel is broken and the lcd image is either black liquid or cracked you need a complete screen.

This is NOT an easy repair and you are doing this at your own risk! The video direction we have for this repair does not include a couple of steps necessary. Once you get the screen assembly out and remove the LCD you will then need to remove the plastic frame & Home Button. The plastic frame is stuck to the touch panel with a glue/double sided tape. You will need to pry the plastic frame away from the old touch panel. Once you have done this, then the home button can come out and transfer. If you pry the plastic frame from the inside, then you should be able to save the rubber seal that is around the edges and is essential to putting it back together later. Use some double-sided tape to stick the new touch panel to the old plastic frame then re-install the LCD and put it back together.
